Discover the Magic of West Coast Swing

A Dance of Rhythm, Connection, and Endless Fun

West Coast Swing is a dance style that captures the essence of cool, smooth, and versatile movement. Whether you're grooving to contemporary hits, classic blues, or funky jazz, this dance has the power to adapt and flow with whatever music you love. But where did it all begin, and why should you consider adding it to your dance repertoire?

A BRIEF HISTORY OF WEST COAST SWING

West Coast Swing, often referred to simply as "WCS," finds its roots in the vibrant dance halls of 1940s America. Born from the earlier Lindy Hop, a high-energy swing dance from Harlem, WCS evolved into a more linear, slotted dance that allows dancers to move back and forth along a narrow line. This makes it perfect for crowded dance floors! As the dance spread from the West Coast (hence the name), it was influenced by various genres of music, including jazz, blues, rock 'n' roll, and eventually pop, R&B, and hip hop.

In 1988, West Coast Swing was officially recognized as the state dance of California—a testament to its deep cultural significance. Over the decades, it has grown into an incredibly popular social dance worldwide, thanks to its improvisational nature, expressive style, and the joy of connection it brings between partners.

WHY WEST COAST SWING IS UNLIKE ANY OTHER DANCE

What sets West Coast Swing apart from other dance styles? It’s all about the connection, creativity, and adaptability. WCS is often referred to as a “conversation” between dance partners, where both the lead and follow have equal opportunities to add their flair and creativity. It's a playful, interactive style of dance that allows for endless expression—whether you're improvising with intricate footwork, playing with musical accents, or getting lost in the smooth, elastic connection between partners.

And the best part? You can dance WCS to virtually any genre of music! From top 40 hits to soulful blues tracks, this dance adapts beautifully, making it incredibly versatile and enjoyable no matter your taste in music.

IT GAVE ME AN OUTLET TO COMPETE!

"I teach over 26 different dance styles, and one of my core values is growth.

As a dancer, I experience the most personal growth when I compete.

West Coast Swing has provided me with an incredible outlet for that growth because, unlike many other dance styles, you don’t need a predetermined partner to compete. In ballroom or other styles, I would need another professional at my level to compete.

However, West Coast Swing offers a unique competition format called 'Jack and Jill,' where partners are randomly paired for each round.

In the U.S., Jack & Jill contests are very popular in the West Coast Swing and Lindy Hop communities. While rules vary, most competitions follow three key guidelines: no pre-arranged choreography (as partners are randomly assigned), no costumes, and no acrobatic moves unless deemed safe by judges. At the Champion or Invitational level, some events feature an "anything goes" format with no rules. Music is typically chosen at random, though some contests allow dancers to select the tempo or a sub-style, like Blues or contemporary within West Coast Swing.

This format has allowed me to continue growing and earning points without the need for a fixed partner, making it my most favorite and exciting dance to pursue."
